Mr. Tamale Man (El Chido)

El Chido at the Trenton Farmer’s Market, 960 Spruce Street, Trenton
(Directions)

El Chido is a hole-in-the-wall store within the Trenton Farmer’s Market, open year round. If you enter from the Spruce Street end, it’s about half way down the main hall, on the right.

El Chido at the Farmer's Market Most of the week, it’s a Mexican specialty shop, with a nice range of hot sauces, chiles, and tortillas. But on Saturdays (only!) the owner sells lovely, home made tamales, individually wrapped in corn husks.

Tamales These are fantastic!

They come in four varieties:

  1. Chicken with roasted green chile
  2. Chicken mole
  3. Chicken salsa verde
  4. Pork with a red chile sauce

They make a wonderful lunch by themselves, or an accompaniment to a Mexican meal. Just pop them in the microwave while still wrapped in the corn husk and nuke them for a minute or so. The corn husk keeps them moist. Then unwrap and enjoy!

Can’t wait to check this out. I love chicken mole!

  • Dennis:

The reds are the best. But the mole’s pretty decent too!

Pick up some corn tortillas, some frijoles, and some chorizo while you’re there, and you’ve got a real Mexican feast!
