The Farmer’s Market is located just over the border from Trenton in Lawrence (though with a Trenton postal address), and is located near Trenton’s Polish enclave. It is open year round.

10 local farms contribute fresh produce in season. During the winter, except for the Terhune Orchards, most of the local farmers are missing which is why the photo above, taken in February, appears so serene. At those times, the market features its specialty vendors and bakeries, some of which are quite wonderful. We’ve separately reviewed El Chido (see Mr. Tamale Man).

Olsson’s Purveyors of Fine Foods have long been strong supporters of Ellarslie. They stock a wonderful selection of exotic cheeses, along with gourmet teas, coffees, and other items.

The founders of Olsson’s are retiring, and the business was purchased in early 2007 by a lovely young couple from Hopewell. So far they have continued the tradition of supporting Ellarslie, and we hope they continue to do so.

Pulaski Meats has a great reputation for its Polish specialties.

Porfirio’s has a nice little stand, with a good selection of Italian specialities, but if you like what you see, try to get to the Anderson Street store (Lotsa Pasta). Those Trenton stand-byes, Italian’s People Bakery and Franca’s Bakery are both also in the market.

There’s a sort of food court in the East Wing…. Years ago, the stand at the end made me the best BLT sandwich I’ve ever eaten: about half a pound of bacon, with ripe, juicy Jersey tomatoes (it was August) and crispy romaine lettuce piled on top, all served up on a fresh, crusty roll slathered with mayo. It’s so long ago that I can’t be sure it’s the same vendor, though it looks the same. I will remember that sandwich for the rest of my life. It’ll definitely be worth another try when tomatoes are in season.
