Take Me Out to the Sports Bar (PD's Outfield)

PD’s Outfield 687 Lamberton Street, Trenton (609) 392-4422
(Directions) Wed-Fri 11AM-2AM; Saturday 6PM-2AM; during Football season also open Sundays (12PM-12AM) and Mondays (6PM-end of game). Food stops around 10PM.

PD’s is a small neighborhood bar, with a pool table and a few TV sets tuned to sports, that does a lot of things right. The owner, Clayton Rice, does the cooking, and it’s simple, fresh, and well executed. Don’t expect anything fancy in terms of decor or food, but if you want a good burger or a Philly steak sandwich (not to mention wings or a salad), you could do a lot worse than PD’s.

For example, for the steak sandwiches, Clayton buys steaks in bulk, and slices them himself. Then individually freezes them in sandwich size portions. It’s obvious that you’re eating real meat rather than some pressed pseudo-beef. The sandwich is overstuffed with steak, and comes on a fresh torpedo roll that sits somewhere between a classic Italian loaf and a Parker-House roll. While it doesn’t quite reach the culinary heights of Pete’s Steak House, it’s very good, and delivers a lot more food for the money.

The burgers are similarly excellent. Not an enormous patty in the tradition of a Rossi’s, but plenty big (8 oz?), on a fresh kaiser roll, with fresh fixings.

PD’s is around the corner from Waterfront Park, and offers better food than you’ll get in the ball park. So it’s a great place to stop for a bite and a beer before taking in a Trenton Thunder ballgame.
