Princetonesque Pleasures (Liquids and Eats)
Liquids and Eats, 118 S. Warren St, Trenton 609-325-3118
(Directions) (Website) Hours: M-F 7 AM-4 PM; Sa 8 AM-2 PM
Liquids and Eats is the sort of refined café that Princetonians assume will spring up in their little burg as a kind of birthright, but which we Trentonians, in a metropolis where the median income is about a third of Princeton’s, haven’t had the pleasure of patronizing – until now.
Liquids and Eats does a full line of tea and coffee drinks, including espresso, cappuccino, and lattes, plus food items like homemade soups, salads, paninis, and breakfast sandwiches, and a range of rich desserts. The menu, while not extensive, is varied, and offers choices to carnivoires and vegetarians. There are even a few Vegan items.
Don’t expect huge portions (it’s not that kind of place); prices are slightly higher than a typical Trenton joint, but reasonable for the quality and atmosphere.
Atmosphere is really the point. Liquids and Eats is in a high-ceilinged, nicely turned out converted storefront on Warren St. There’s free wi-fi, and the tables are comfortable and well lit. You’re invited to hang out all day if you want. It’s kind of expected that you order an espresso or something every once in a while, but I doubt anyone would say anything if you didn’t, as long as you sat quietly reading a book or working on your laptop.
It’s the perfect sort of place to meet your friend from out of town who’s feeling trepidation about coming to Trenton for the first time. Or really, meeting anybody downtown, especially if you’re not too sure they’ll show up on time, just because it’s a nice place to hang out.
Owner Barbara Horne has created a lovely space which is quickly becoming a favorite meeting place downtown for a broad cross section of the Trenton community.
