Sportmen’s Pub is a friendly, workingman’s (and women’s) bar that offers an authentic Trenton Tomato pie. At it’s best, it’s really good, as good as the Finalists. We visited a few times, though, with inconsistent results. The pie’s crust stays crisp throughout your meal. It does lack char and complexity, and we’ve had samples where it was too dry for our taste (but others where we thought it was just right). Toppings include decent cheese, with intense, slightly sweet tomato in good balance. Mushrooms are fresh, pre-cooked (which helps keep the crust crisp), and slightly seasoned. Just across the street from Trenton (the border runs down the center of Lalor Street), Sportsmen’s Pub is the closest place to get a beer with your pie, one of the least expensive, and one of the best.
