There are roughly a dozen restaurants similar to La Taqueria in the City of Trenton. Compared to them, La Taqueria (located on a decidedly suburban site in Lawrence) is better than most, slightly more expensive (but still a bargain), and much more nicely appointed. So, if you find yourself in Lawrence looking for a quick, inexpensive bite, it’s a good place to stop. Similarly, if you’re just beginning to explore the local Mexican food scene, and aren’t quite ready to go the full Monte in Trenton, La Taqueria represents an easy way to get started. It’s brand new, immaculately clean, and you can park right outside the door.
As its name suggests, La Taqueria is a Mexican-style grill featuring meats and seafood: always on the menu are Carne Asada (marinated beef), Adobado (marinated pork), Chorizo (pork sausage), Pollo (marinated chicken), and Camarones (shrimp). Other preparations are available as specials. You can order tacos, burritos, sopes (fried, crispy masa rounds), flautas, tortas, nachos, quesadillas, enchiladas, and pupusas. You can also order platters, including mixed grills, and fried whole fish. Vegetarians can piece together a decent meal with cheese or veggie quesadillas or cheese pupusas. Vegans will have a much tougher time.
There’s really a lot to like about what they do: home made salsas (I especially like the red chile salsa), tortillas, and chips. Delicious black beans.
The meats themselves are tasty but, in my experience, came slightly overcooked. Not so much of an issue with the tacos (where the meats are chopped and blended with onions and heavily sauced); more of an issue when you order a platter. It’s a common problem in Mexican and Guatemalan joints, and only the best restaurants in town consistently deliver moist meat. It’s why we rated La Taqueria 3 hearts instead of 4.
We’ve rated the restaurant a bargain for lunch, not only because it’s a fundamentally inexpensive restaurant, but also because they offer rotating lunch specials during the week.
