Anthony Rabara is a long-time Trenton resident, a retired ballet dancer, and one of the top Pilates instructors in the world. His north-Princeton based studio isn’t incredibly convenient to Trenton, but it’s close enough (29 minutes without traffic from Mill Hill).
At a time when every gym and workout joint claims to offer Pilates instruction, Rabara is the real deal, having started teaching in 1983. Anthony trained under Romana Kryanowska, a woman who was Joseph and Clara Pilates’ protege, and who, until her mid 80s, taught Pilates in NYC (she passed away in 2013). Anthony is one of a handful of Romana-trained, 2nd-degree certified instructors, which means he’s certified to teach trainers of trainers of Pilates. He travels all over the world to do Master Classes for other Pilates instructors, e.g. Australia in 2015.
The studio, located off of 206 near the Princeton airport, is almost always busy, with a core group of 6 or so instructors, and a few other occasional ones. All of the instructors are good. Some will have a teaching style that suits you better than others. The instructors range in age from late 20s to nearly 70.
Pilates instruction of this quality isn’t cheap, but the studio offers a range of programs at different levels of affordability from group classes, to trios, duets, and private instruction. If you take classes from a teacher-in-training, you can save some money as well. Usually there are one or two at the studio at any given time.
