(Covid Update Dec 2021 – in business) Antojitos y Helados (literally: Snacks and Ice Cream) is a tiny Guatemalan restaurant in the heart of Chambersburg. As a restaurant, it’s fine… the meals are authentic, fresh, and home-cooked. However, because of its tiny size (only 3 small tables) the menu is extremely limited, and you have to be prepared to wait to be seated, especially if your group is 4 or more people. Frankly, simply as a restaurant, we would rate it 1-heart. There are too many other Guatemalan restaurants in town with better menus, and equally good or better food.

However, the unique offering of this place is the second half of its name: “Helados”. To my knowledge, this is the only restaurant in town offering a variety of Guatemalan-style water-ices. The flavors, to a gringo palate, are pretty exotic: coconut, strawberry, mixed fruit, pina colada, mango, vanilla, peanut, tamarind, tamarind with chile, mango with chile, pineapple with chile, and chocolate. I recently sampled the Tamorindo Chile, which I enjoyed tremendously: it started quite spicy, with equal parts salt, sugar, tamarind, and fire. As I worked past the outer layer, the spice eased a fair amount, and the sweet started to dominate. Still it never became cloying. If you have a peanut allergy, be careful. I detected a distinct peanut flavor in my tamarind ice.
