According to the Urban Dictionary, the term Hoagie is Philly slang for a sub sandwich. Italian men who lived on Hog Island (an island intersecting the Delaware and Schuylkyl Rivers) packed lunches made from large loaves of bread filled with meats — known as “hoggies.” Sometime by the end of WWII, the word transformed into its modern pronunciation and spelling: “hoagie.”
Matty Mo’s opened in 2011 on the 200 block of Broad Street, opposite the Courthouse, and next door to Lexi Lu’s Cafe. The same owner operates Lexi Lu’s and Matty Mo’s. Lexi Lu is named after the owner’s daughter… Matty Mo’s after his wife. It’s now the best place within the City of Trenton to buy a sub/hoagie.
A good sub can’t be made cheaply, and unfortunately many Trenton establishments sacrifice quality to keep the price low. Matty Mo’s seems to have found a good balance: the quality is high and the price is still reasonable. The bread is fresh and has a chewy crust. The sandwiches have a nice balance of salad and meat. The tomatoes were nice, ripe plum tomatoes. I like pickles on my sandwich, and Matty Mo’s sliced a good quality Kosher dill.
The newly renovated prep area is kept immaculately clean.
Really, it’s a very nice addition to the lunch options downtown, and an improvement over Pete’s, which used to be located in the same storefront.
You can have your subs. I want a real hoagie. Believe it or not, Trenton is a “suburb” of Philly and not the 6th borough.
New to Trenton and love using you as a resource to try out new things!! Thanks HT!!
Had a great wrap there recently. Seemed like a bargain because it was big, and delicious.
You are right about the quality hoagies. The bread is chewy and crusty just the way I like it. I also like the pleasant attitude, makes me want to come back even more.
