(Covid Update Dec 2021 – in business) Mastoris is one of those places that doesn’t seem possible when you first go there. First of all, it’s impossibly huge… the website claims they serve up to 2,800 people per day, and certainly the facility is large enough. Second, when you sit down, your waitress will bring you a plate piled high with two loaves of sweet bread, one each of cinnamon and cheese. Don’t eat too much bread, though, since the portions on your order, when it arrives, will be huge.
Continuously run by the same family, who’ve been in the diner business since 1927, Mastoris in Bordentown has been an institution since 1959.
It’s first rate diner food, with huge breakfasts, overstuffed sandwiches, and enormous dinner platters, accompanied by soup, salad, and dessert. The cuisines are eclectic, with an Italian concentration. Open until 2 AM.
Mastoris is awesome, amazing place, have to go 10x at least to get a feel for the menu though – it’s extensive.
I have to say, I’ve always found Mastoris to be a bit overrated. It’s a little pricey and in my opinion the incredibly broad menu is full of hit or miss items. I recently had their potato pancakes, which they are making differently since the last time I sampled them, and they were a little bland. On the other hand, my husband loved his omelette. I will say, the cinnamon and cheese breads are to die for. It’s worth a trip for those (which you can also purchase up front at their bakery counter).
